OpenAI will soon allow ChatGPT erotica content for verified adult users

OpenAI will soon loosen restrictions on the content ChatGPT can generate, allowing the service to create “erotica” if users so desire, CEO Sam Altman announced Tuesday.

Altman said the new feature will only apply to users who explicitly request it. He said the current restrictions on ChatGPT are the result of an abundance of caution regarding mental health, but said he now believes the language model can “treat adult users like adults.”

“Now that we have alleviated serious mental health issues and have new tools, we will be able to safely ease restrictions in most cases,” Altman wrote.

“In the coming weeks, we’ll be rolling out a new version of ChatGPT that will allow you to have a personality that behaves just like what people liked about 4o (hopefully even better!). “If you want to respond, use tons of emojis, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it for you (but only if that’s what you want, not because you’re maximizing usage),” he continued.

“In December, we plan to roll out age restrictions more fully and allow more things, including certified adult erotica, as part of our ‘adult users like adults’ principle,” he said.

Altman went on to clarify that users “don’t get it unless they ask for it” with this feature.

The announcement comes about a month after OpenAI introduced new ChatGPT features aimed at creating a safer experience for teens.

Enhanced protections for teens will allow parents to link their ChatGPT account to their teen’s account, control how ChatGPT responds to their teen with age-appropriate model behavior rules, and manage which features, such as memory and chat history, are disabled, the company said in a blog post.

“We prioritize the safety of teens over their privacy and freedom. We believe this is a new and powerful technology, and minors deserve adequate protections,” Altman said in a statement last month.

Parents will also receive a notification if the system detects that their child is in severe distress, but OpenAI said this feature will be driven by expert opinion.

“If a user under 18 is experiencing suicidal thoughts, we will attempt to contact the user’s parents, but if that is not possible, we will contact authorities in the event of imminent harm,” Altman said.
