Over 224K jewelry making kits reminded me of dangerous substance violations


Larose Industries has issued a recall of 224,100 CRA-Z-ART GEMEX/GEL2GEM jewelry making kits after learning that acrylates are harmful to the resins in the kit.

The recall alert stated that liquid form resins are prohibited from hydroxyethyl methacrylate, also known as “hema”, and can cause irritation or sensitization of the skin, eyes and respiratory tract if inhaled, touched or ingested.

Product volumes exceed those permitted for children’s products under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.

Larose Industries is recalling 224,100 Cra-Z-ART GEMEX/GEL2GEM jewelry making kits because the resins contained in the kit are prohibited from hydroxyethyl methacrylate, known as “Hema.” (Consumer Product Safety Commission / FoxBusiness)

Ten models of the CRA-Z-ART GEMEX/GEL2GEM kit are included in the recall, with one refill pack included. The recalled jewelry making kit includes a resin bottle and UV set lights, and comes in a box with the “Cra-Z-Art” brand name and labeled “Gemex” or “Crazy Gel2Gem.”

The kits were sold at Target, Marshall, TJ Max and Joann stores, and were sold from January 2023 to September 2024 on Amazon, Target, Walmart and Joann for $13 to $36.

Resin is only dangerous if it has not been fully cured. That is, there is a liquid or liquid residue. In that case, the manufacturer states that gems should not be worn, but should be kept away from children.

Larose Industries said no injuries were reported.
