Social media star says New York Jews involved after Mamdani’s major victory
Entrepreneur and social media tycoon Ben Sofa responds to NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s victory, what it means to the Jewish community, and how he has become a social media character.
As some residents say they are beginning to question whether the nation’s biggest city is a safe place for them, anti-Semitism concerns continue to grow in New York City. One social media star says Zoran Mamdani’s victory in the democratic mayoral primary only escalated the horrors of the Jewish community.
“We’re very scared,” said social media influencer and entrepreneur Ben Sofa. “I was afraid to be openly Jewish here, so I never thought I had to leave.”
Sofa, who lived in New York City for a lifetime, said he was thinking about overcoming the rise in anti-Semitism in the area. He said his main concern is that Zoran Mamdani could potentially become the city’s next mayor.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old state legislator from Queens, is a self-proclaimed socialist who defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary. Since the upset of his election, Mamdani has faced pressure to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada.”

Lawmakers have repeatedly circumvented this issue. Other political leaders, including minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, point out that Mamdani needs to clarify his stance on the phrase.

“Mamdani and his members are turning Zionism into slur,” Sofa said in “Varney & Co.” Monday. “It’s not the slurs who want to proudly become Jews and feel that Jews have the right to their hometown.”
Mamdani was asked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” if he would denounce the controversial phrase on Sunday. He responded by saying that it was not a language he personally used, but that he did not issue any clear condemnation.
“It’s language, I understand, I have concerns,” Mamdani said. “What I do is introduce my vision for the city through words and actions.”

“For some reason, people turn their eyes off when it comes to Jews,” he said. “They can’t see [hate] Similarly, Jews are considered these white and rich people. And that’s not true. ”
Sofa argues that attempts to separate anti-Zionism from anti-Semitism do not work, both ultimately being hate speech.

“They hide behind that anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism are not the same thing, and they are,” he said. “To those people, I say, ‘What are you, nuts?’ ”
Mamdani’s campaign has been supported among younger, more progressive voters. As an official Democratic candidate, he faces Republican candidate Curtis Swawa and incumbent mayor Eric Adams, and Mayor Eric Adams in the general election and his defeated opponent Andrew Cuomo chose to vote as an independent.
