Trudeau says Canada will issue a 25% tariff on US goods following Trump’s tariff

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a 25% tariff on American goods in response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs that will be in effect on Canadian imports late Tuesday night.

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs are being charged on $155 billion, which is in effect at $12:15 billion Tuesday.

Trump has signed an executive order allowing an additional 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on Chinese imports. Energy imported from Canada, including oil, natural gas and electricity, is taxed at an additional 10%.

China has since imposed tariffs on the US, and Mexico has vowed to retaliate tariffs.

Last month, the Trump administration agreed to a 30-day delay in imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods. Officials from both countries have been negotiating with the Trump administration in recent weeks, but there has been no agreement to reduce tariffs.

Trudeau said Monday that it was “not justified by these actions,” pointing to the White House claims, and while drug flows including fentanyl guaranteed tariffs in Canada, Mexico and China, the amount of fentanyl coming across the northern border is very low.

“Lower than 1% of fentanyl intercepted at the US border come from Canada, but they have worked relentlessly to deal with this tragedy that affects Canadians and Americans alike,” Trudeau said in a statement. “We implemented a $1.3 billion border plan with new choppers, ground boots, more adjustments and more resources to stop the flow of fentanyl.”

“We have appointed Emperor Fentanyl, list cross-border criminal cartels as terrorist organizations, set up a joint operational intelligence cell, and establish a joint Canadian-US strike on organized crime,” he continued. “For this work, in cooperation with the US, fentanyl attacks from Canada fell 97% between December 2024 and January 2025, down to a zero low of £0.03 seized by US customs border protection.”

Trudeau said Canada would “not unanswered this unfair decision,” and announced that if Trump’s tariffs come into effect in the middle of the night, as promised, then tariffs on American goods will come into effect at 12:01am.

Canada said tariffs on US goods worth $30 billion will continue in 21 days, followed by tariffs on US goods worth $125 billion.

“Our tariffs will continue until US trade measures are withdrawn, and if US tariffs do not cease, we are actively and continuing discussions with the states and the territories to pursue some non-tariff measures,” the prime minister said. “We are firmly committed to standing up for our economy, employment, workers and fair dealings while urging the US administration to reconsider their tariffs.”

Trudeau said Americans pay more for groceries, gas and cars, and could lose thousands of jobs as a result of Trump’s tariffs.

“Taxes will disrupt a very successful business relationship,” he said. “They violate the very trade agreement negotiated by President Trump in his previous period.”
