Trump will extend EU tariff deadlines to July 9 as trade negotiations accelerate

The European Union has agreed to President Donald Trump to agree to a swift trade talks with the United States following the threat of further sanctions on the region.
The European Commission made the announcement Monday after a call between Trump and EU President Ursula von der Leyen. Trump last week threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on European imports from June 1st, but he has now agreed to delay plans until July 9th to give him time to negotiate.
“They agreed to both quickly track the negotiations and get close contact,” committee spokeswoman Paula Pinho told reporters Monday.
“These negotiations are complicated and take time,” she added. “Now there’s a new driving force for negotiations, and we’ll take that from there.”

Trump announced the tariff expansion in a true social post on Sunday, saying he made a productive call with von der Leyen.
“July 9, 2025 – I agreed to an extension. It was my privilege to do so,” Trump wrote. “The committee president said consultations will begin quickly. Thank you for paying attention to this issue!”
While talking to reporters at Morristown Municipal Airport in New Jersey on Sunday, Trump said von der Leyen called him and wanted to have “serious negotiations.”

“July 9th was the date she requested…and I agreed to do that,” Trump said. “[von der Leyen] We said we would get together quickly and see if we could solve anything. ”

Trade talks between the US and Europe stumbled on May 18th after Von del Reyen and Vice President JD Vance met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Ameloni.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Becent also said last week that Trump is aiming to “light a fire” under the EU for trade negotiations.
“I hope this will light a fire under the EU… because I said it before [the] The EU has a collective action problem here,” Bessent said. “American Newsroom.” “It’s 27 countries, but they’re represented by this one group in Brussels. So some of the feedback I’m getting is that the underlying countries don’t even know what the EU is negotiating on their behalf.”
