US lawyer rejected by the Judicial Department in a push to escalate investigation into Schumer

Ed Martin, a US lawyer for the District of Columbia, quietly promotes quietly presenting evidence on comments he made about Supreme Court judges in 2020, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

Justice Department officials have so far rejected the extraordinary demands made by President Trump’s partisan ally Martin without previous prosecutors’ experience, one of them said.

Martin revealed his hopes to investigate whether the remarks made by Schumer five years ago belong to a threat to Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil M. Golsch. According to current and former prosecutors, it is very rare to bring such a case, and it is difficult to win a conviction.

Last month, Martin wrote to Schumer a letter requesting “information and clarification” of his remarks made at the rally on March 4, 2020, signaling his intention to take an offensive approach.

“You’ve released a whirlwind, and you’ll pay the price!” Schumer said at the rally that he worked on his remarks to Justice Kavanaugh and Judge Gorsuch. Schumer’s staff retracted his statement, and the senator apologized a day later, saying “I shouldn’t have used the words I used.”

Schumer added that he referred to “political consequences” rather than violent retaliation, and he spoke about his upbringing in Brooklyn.

Presenting evidence to the large ju judge investigating Schumer would be a substantial escalation of Martin’s efforts. It allows prosecutors to summon records and witnesses, giving them a broad mandate to dig into dim-rogical information – even if Schumer never gets charged with accusations of inciting violence against civil servants.

A five-year time limit for prosecuting Schumer under the most likely charges that could stem from Tuesday’s investigation.

Martin, Schumer and representatives from the Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump has nominated Martin. Martin has become Washington’s permanent US lawyer for promoting Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen. However, his bipartisan presence and targeting of his enemy on social media may complicate his confirmation potential while in sync with Trump’s demands for retaliation against his perceived enemy.

Sen. Tom Tillis of North Carolina – Republicans who served on the Senate Judiciary Committee and provided a key boost to Kash Patel’s nomination as director of the FBI, confirming Martin. “A real challenge.”

The safety of Supreme Court judges has become an increasingly worrying issue as the court’s ruling inflamed partisan and ideological tensions. In 2022, two years after Schumer said about the role of justice in rewinding abortion rights, a man was arrested while swinging a knife and gun near Kavanaugh’s home outside of Washington. He told the police he was going to kill justice.

Some Republicans accused Schumer of inciting the failed attack, despite saying the man was motivated by police. Leaked opinions on court rulings It overturns the right to abortion.

Martin is about to submit a table of Democrats who accused Trump and his supporters of leading him into an era of political violence, and has opted not to accept Schumer’s benign explanations of his comments.

Schumer’s spokesman said his office had previously received a letter from Martin last month asking about his remarks. Within days, Schumer’s Chief of Staff responded with his letter, writing that the senator’s comments were “not a threat to physically injure any person.”

In an email to his staff last month, Martin announced the creation of the “Whirlwind operation” To investigate threats to civil servants, including an investigation into statements by Schumer and California Democrat Robert Garcia.

Martin, who supported the tolerance given to rioters by Trump, convicted of attacking Capitol on January 6, 2021, demanded last month that Garcia was asked to know why he asked Democrats to “real weapons” for Musk’s efforts. It is not clear whether he has opened any other inquiries.

Garcia, like Schumer, said his remarks were phobic and not an invitation to violence.

In just over a month, Martin overturned one of the nation’s most important US lawyers’ firms responsible for investigating political violence and corruption, in addition to dealing with prosecutions for street crimes in cities that have been plagued by gun violence and carjacking in recent years.

Several prosecutors in the office were demoted to a low-level position dealing with mild crimes on Friday. This is another step in a retaliation campaign against Justice Department officials who are perceived as enemies by the Trump administration.

Those demoted include at least two prosecutors who oversee all cases arising from the events of January 6th and worked on the trial of the proud juvenile and members of the Soldier Keeper Militia.

A week ago, a highly regarded director in the office’s criminal department; Dennis Chongresigned after denying requests from Martin and other Justice Department officials to freeze government contractor assets, she said there was insufficient evidence to do so.

On Monday, Martin announced her replacement in an email to staff member, along with a memo outlining his intentions to increase gun crime prosecutions.
