Charlie Hull aims for big finish to LPGA Tour season at CME Group Tour Championship after eventful week at The Annica | Golf News
Charlie Hull is aiming to finish the LPGA Tour season strong with an impressive finish at Annika, overcoming pre-tournament passport issues and illness.
Due to a delay in renewing his visa, Hull will not be able to travel from England to Florida until Tuesday, and due to illness, Hull will miss Wednesday’s pro-am match and will enter the tournament without a practice round.
Hull said he was “just flying around the golf course” with an opening-round 68 at Pelican Golf Club, then went on to post consecutive 67th places and shot a bogey-free 63 on the final day to climb onto the leaderboard.
The British woman finished tied for fourth place, five strokes behind teammate Lynn Grant at the Solheim Cup, and Hull was pleased with her performance ahead of the season finale, the CME Group Tour Championship.
“When I was in the car, I thought, ‘I’m going to give it my all today, make as many birdies as I can, and chase down Lynn Grant,'” Hull said after the final round. “I played very solid all day.
“I hit it pretty well. I left some putts behind. I feel good going into next week.” [CME Group Tour Championship]Especially since there were no practice rounds this week. ”
Only the top 60 players in the LPGA Tour’s Race to the CME Globe standings qualify, and Hull is the highest-ranked European player in points all season after another impressive campaign.
Hull won her third LPGA Tour title at the Kroger Queen City Championship in September and finished runner-up at the AIG Women’s Open, and the 29-year-old is now relishing the chance to return to the venue where she scored her breakthrough victory on the LPGA Tour in 2016.
“that [confidence] It feels really good,” Hull added. “I could have won on that course.” [Tiburon Golf Club] in front. It was my first win on the LPGA Tour, so I have fond memories of it.
“I played there a second time (in 2019) and I like the golf course. So, yeah, it’s going to be a good end to the season.”
The winner will be named “Race to the CME Globe Champion” and receive a prize of $4 million, the highest in women’s golf history, and the runner-up will receive $1 million.
A historic time for British golf on the LPGA Tour
Major winners Miyu Yamashita, Grace Kim, Mao Saigo and Maja Stark are all competing with Grant, and Nelly Korda is also looking to avoid a winless season on the LPGA Tour.
Hull is joined by compatriot Lottie Ward, who only turned professional in the summer and made her debut, and now has two British women in the world’s top 10 for the first time in history.
Other European players were also in action, including Grant, Celine Boutier, Carlota Ciganda, Maja Stark, Esther Henseleit, Madeleine Sagström and Leona Maguire, while world No. 1 and defending champion Gino Titicle topped the season rankings with two wins and 13 top-10s this season.
