Geraint Thomas: Tour de France winner to retire from cycling at the end of the season | Cycling News

Geraint Thomas announced he will retire from cycling at the end of the season.
The 38-year-old two-time Olympic gold medalist who won the Tour de France in 2018 will knock down the curtains on his career 19 years as a professional.
“This year will be racing my bike in my final year,” Thomas told his podcast. Geraint Thomas Cycling Club. “It’s weird, it’s always been deep in my mind, the last four years I thought it would be my last, but it’s official, this will be my last year.

“When you say it out loud, it’s like, ‘In seven or eight months, I’ll do it.’ You can’t do it forever. Do too much.
“I’m still really enjoying riding my bike, I’m racing, training, fitter. That’s something I’ve loved since I was 12. But I thought I’d quit last year, I’m here now. I don’t want to go to the stage where I don’t want to.
“The main thing is family. Mac (his son) will be six this year. This is weird. I’ve enjoyed coming to the race and remembering it, and I’ve been keeping it going for so long. I’m glad you gave me it. I thought it was cool to have him around because Macs was born a year later when I won the tour.
“This is my 19th season. For a long time, I’ll mix it up and keep the variety. But the timing is correct.”
