Rory McIlroy plays at the Texas Children’s Houston Open after winning the player championship at TPC Sawgrass | Golf News

Rory McIlroy has pledged to play at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, which marks his final start before competing in the Masters.
McIlroy came out from behind winning his second player championship after kicking out JJ Spaun in the three-hole playoffs at TPC Sawgrass on Monday.
He then said he would head to Augusta before he could play again. There, he said the Northern Irish would once again bid to finish his long journey to complete his career grand slam.
“I think we have three weeks in, so it’s a little too much, so I’m going to play one of the events in Texas. Whether it’s Houston or San Antonio, I’m sure,” McIlroy said Monday.
McIlroy launched an inspirational final day surge to turn a four-shot deficit into a three-shot advantage on the fourth day of the player. This is when Spaun takes him to the playoffs on the fifth day following a long delay due to the threat of lightning.
It was his second victory on the PGA Tour of the season, following his victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year.
The Houston Open will begin on Thursday, March 27th, with McIlroy having a week off before chasing Green Jackets in Augusta.
McIlroy is looking forward to being his first start in the event that Stephen Jaeger acquired last year, with world number one Scotty Scheffler tied second in a group of five players.
McIlroy’s best finish at the Masters came when he flew off the leaderboard in 2022 and finished second. Meanwhile, his most notorious came in 2011 when the player leading after the Masters in the third round surrendered a four-stroke advantage on the final day by carding the worst round in history.
