9 Best Mattresses for Back Pain, Tests and Reviews (2025)
Honorable mention
Wolf 12 Inch Memory Foam Hybrid Medium Farm Mattress $899: Wired reviewer Molly Higgins was surprisingly impressed with this affordable mattress. She feels that medium farm memory foam hybrid mattresses are far more luxurious than the price range suggests, with individually wrapped coils helping with greater support and overall construction, while top gel foam fits your body curves and helps relieve pressure.
DreamCloud Premiere Hybrid is $949: This soft mattress was still supportive. I liked to sleep with it, but it never went away my back pain as much as the other mattresses we recommend. Still, if you need support without being too stiff as a side sleeper, it was a great option.

Plank Firm Natural is $1,492: I love this flipperable, solid mattress. It is very breathable and kind and support your back and spine, awakening a painless awakening. And although the stiffest side is too firm for the shoulders, I usually sleep on this mattress with a mattress topper and feel at ease on my shoulders. Planck is sadly canceling the mattress, but I recommend scooping it up if you find it.
Wink bed is $1,499: Wired reviewer Julian Chocut recommends this mattress for fellow stomachs and back sleepers. It has three levels of hardness. He tried out a luxurious company, but loved the luxurious pillowtops that add a luxurious, hotel-like feel to their relatively solid beds.
Saatva Classic $1,699: This was the previous pick of the best mattress guide. This is a good option for back support, especially at a “luxurious” hardness level.
SAATVA Memory Foam Hybrid is $1,799: The SAATVA Memory Foam Hybrid is sold well and is designed to support your waist with cushioning in the center. Wired contributor Nicole Kinning was a bit too short at 5’2″ for lumbar support, but could be suitable for people of more average sizes. It also has cooling properties, but was not noticeable compared to other cooling mattresses.
Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Lux Cooling Mattress $1,585: If you’re looking for something that’s more solid and resembles a solid Planck Natural, this is another good choice. It also has cooling, but this is a great bonus.
Purple Restore Restores Cool Touch for $2,395: Wired contributor Nicole Kinning says this is definitely the best Cooling mattress With a long shot. There is also a grid-like gel layer called Gelflex, which adds additional support and allows you to easily get out of bed in the morning.
Essentia Tatami Organic Mattress $3,435: This mattress is made of a very comfortable organic latex support core with holes for breathability (and helps in cooling), and the active organic foam center helps support spinal alignment and pressure points. There are no coils or springs, but they are still surprisingly supportive.
Avoid mattresses
There is no more horrible futon mattresses that started my hunt, but for that, there are many other mattresses that have sparked my wired reviewer’s back pain.
Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt $2,199:This mattress was very soft and fit, but it wasn’t supportive at all and had a more sinking sensation when you put it down. The pain in my right side of the muscle got worse after the night on this mattress and my damaged spine felt obviously unhappy. My sister also tried to sleep with it, but she described it as “sleeping on an air mattress that has lost air all night.”
Magniflex Magnistretch 12 $3,699: This Italian-made mattress is advertised as having a stretched spine. It is approved by retired Italian footballer Giorgio Ciellini and current professional basketball player Stefano Tonatz. Well, Magniflex definitely does something on the spine, but wired reviewer Martin Cizmar felt it was very unwelcome. He wept his uncle and lasted only two nights on a magnificent stretch before stepping into his next test mattress. He describes the morning feeling similar to sleeping in a hammock made from chain link fences.
